Many years ago, I was eating at a new restaurant and I noticed that on their menu they had something called “creamed spinach.”

Being a fan of spinach in general, I decided to give it a try and I was pleasantly surprised. It turned out to be a delicious and creamy side dish that I just couldn’t get enough of!

Recently, I decided to try to recreate this dish at home using a keto  friendly version.

I kept the traditional elements of the dish while making some simple substitutions to suit a low carb diet.

And the result? A delicious and creamy keto creamed spinach that’s just as good (if not better) as the original!

For this keto creamed spinach recipe you will need:

  • 10oz (280g) Baby Spinach
  • 1/4 cup Mozzarella (shredded)
  • 2 Garlic Cloves (minced)
  • 1/4 cup Parmesan (grated)
  • 1/2 cup Heavy Cream (full fat)
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons Butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon Black Pepper

⭐ Making Keto Creamed Spinach 

This low carb creamed spinach recipe is so fun and easy! Follow these steps:

Step 1

Place a large pan over medium heat. Add butter. Once hot, add the minced garlic and saute for about 1 minute.

Step 2

Add the baby spinach leaves. Mix them well, and then cover the pan. Cook for about 5 minutes.

Step 3

Then, add the Parmesan cheese, Mozzarella cheese, heavy cream, salt, and pepper.

Continue mixing until the cheese melts completely. Simmer for 2-3 more minutes (to allow the sauce to thicken).

Step 4

Remove from the heat and allow the keto creamed spinach to cool for at least 10 minutes. Then, serve.

I really like dishes made with spinach, but moderation is key- spinach is very high in oxalates and can cause issues if eaten in large quantities.

Eating a dish with spinach from time to time can be ok (as long as you don’t have any underlying health issues), but don’t make it a daily habit.

Mozzarella & Parmesan

I used these two kinds of cheese to give my keto creamed spinach a nice and creamy texture.

You can try and use other types of cheese, such as cheddar or gruyere, but in my opinion- nothing beats the classic combination of mozzarella and Parmesan!

Heavy Cream

Make sure to use full fat heavy cream for this keto creamed spinach recipe. It’s important to use full fat cream because it gives the creamed spinach a creamier texture and more flavor.

Low fat cream won’t work as well and the texture will be much more watery.

From time to time, I get comments from people who say that their dishes turned out watery. And when I ask what type of cream they used, I usually find out it was a low fat version.

Seasonings

I used some basic seasonings for my keto creamy spinach, but feel free to adjust the amounts or use different spices depending on your taste preferences.

Smoked paprika and garlic powder can be great additions, as can red pepper flakes or a pinch of nutmeg.
